Multi-element interventions for first-episode psychosis (FEP) appear highly promising and have been associated with better clinical and social outcomes and reduction of the risk of relapse. However, they should be monitored for long periods in order to clarify their effectiveness mechanisms. In this prospective, the 5-years after FEP are a crucial period for assessing recovery and outcomes. The GET UP Trial (Genetics, Endophenotype, Treatment: Understanding early Psychosis) used a randomized clustered design to test the feasibility and effectiveness of a multi-element psychosocial intervention vs. TAU in 444 FEP patients and their families. The study proved that at 9 months the experimental intervention had a significant effect in improving patients’ psychopathology, functioning and subjective appraisal of symptoms (Ruggeri et al., 2015). This pilot study re-assesses all patients recruited in the GET UP Trial in the catchment areas of Bolzano (n=18) and Verona (n=12),with the same set of instruments, after 5 years from the baseline assessments . The aim is to assess the relationship between quality, intensity and length of the intervention received (as reported in admission and discharge summaries, psychiatric notes, case managers’ information for the period 2010-2015) and the 5 year follow-up of psychopathology (PANSS) and functioning (GAF) This study will help to understanding how FEP interventions work in the medium term run and shed light on the active ‘therapeutic ingredients' in the early psychosis phase. This information would be highly informative for ‘maintenance' care options to ensure that early gains are not lost over time.
